When Midland girls' lacrosse co-captains Jordyn Malace and Gabby Wilson think about the season their team has had, they can't help but smile.

And the Cavaliers' postseason is just getting started.

Emma Murphy had eight goals and two assists, Malace had five goals and two assists and Wilson had two goals and four assists in Midland's 24-1 Division 1 pre-regional victory over Grand Blanc on Friday at Midland Stadium.

The resounding win sends Midland into next Wednesday's 6 p.m. regional semifinal against Walled Lake Central, which will be played at Walled Lake Western High School.
"This is the best season our team has ever had," enthused Wilson, who's a sophomore.

"We have a lot of new players this year, and everybody just started clicking," said Malace, a senior. "It's just cool to see how the team works together. ... I've played other sports, and I've just never been on a team like this."

Midland (18-1 overall) won the Saginaw Valley League this season for the first time, and has rarely been challenged by anyone outside of its lone loss on April 5 to Hartland, a team that the Cavaliers could play again in the regional final on May 31.

"With the way we've been playing, we should get to the regional final," Wilson said.

Also in Friday's game, Grace Wilson had two goals and two assists; Renee Mulvaney had two goals; Delaney Abbott had a goal and an assist; Emma Rekeweg, Chelsea Long, Laura Hershauer and Megan Pnacek each scored a goal; and Margaret Gandy and Erica Grenesko each had an assist.

Midland had 33 shots and limited the Bobcats to six shots.

The Cavaliers built a 12-0 halftime lead and didn't allow a goal until just over eight minutes remained in the game, which made the score 20-1.

Midland assistant coach Pam Wilson, filling in for head coach MacKenzie Lipps, who was out of town, said that this team is just scratching the surface of its potential.

"They're better than they (think) they are, which is a good place to be," Wilson said with a smile.

"It's a joy to coach this team," she said. "Their energy level is so high. It's really been fun."

And for Gabby Wilson and Malace, serving as captains is an honor.

"It's been amazing to lead this awesome group of girls," Wilson said.

"I couldn't ask for a better (senior season)," Malace said.
