Cal Stearns scored three goals in his varsity debut as Midland rolled to an 18-3 win over visiting Lapeer in a boys' lacrosse Division 1 regional opener at Midland Stadium on Friday.

Midland will play the Grand Blanc/Linden winner in a regional semifinal on Thursday at Linden.

Elliot Moore had two goals and one assist; Ryan Pomranky and Mason Reed each scored two goals; Ryan Sisitki had one goal and three assists; and Ryan Stadelmaier, Jacob Tomsich and Lars George each had one goal and one assist.

Single goals came from Chase Mahabir, Carson Gray, Ben Brueck, Ethan Smith and Dawson Studebaker, who also made his varsity debut, as did Jason Labby. Kahler Kranz had one assist.

Joey Cullinane won 11 faceoffs and Cole Rynalski won seven faceoffs, and Xander Brooks led the team with four ground balls.

Midland built a 14-3 halftime lead against a Lapeer team that Midland coach Joe Stadelmaier said was improved from the last time Midland had played them.

"We were able to get a lot of players in that typically don't see a lot of playing time," Stadelmaier said. "I was really happy with Brandon Kovacevich — he played the entire game in goal and had six saves."
