After her team captured its first Saginaw Valley League championship and lost only one game in the regular season, Midland co-op girls' lacrosse head coach MacKenzie Lipps is enthused about the future of the program.

"It was quite an accomplishment," Lipps said of going 7-0 in the SVL.

"At the end of the season, we were ranked eighth in Divison 1, which is another huge accomplishment," added Lipps, who's been the head coach for four seasons. "I don't know that we've ever been in the top 10 before, at least since I've been here. That speaks well for the future of the program."

Midland's only loss in the regular season came early in the season to Hartland and seemed to give her team a springboard into the rest of the spring, Lipps said.

"I think after the Hartland loss, we kind of recognized our potential," she said.

Midland went on to finish 18-2 after reaching the second round of the regional playoffs and taking a 13-11 loss to Walled Lake United on the road.

Freshman midfielder Emma Murphy had a tremendous season for Midland with a team-high 91 goals and 12 assists.

"She was a huge asset to us, both attack-wise and in draw controls," Lipps said.

Sophomore midfielder Gabby Wilson had 43 goals and 27 assists, sophomore attacker Grace Wilson had 26 goals and 32 assists, and senior attacker Jordyn Malace had 44 goals and eight assists.

Malace, Maureen Meadow, Chelsea Long, Brooke Stemler, Megan Pnacek and goalie Ella Lane have now graduated. But four juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen will return next season.

"We have a young team with a lot of young players on both sides of the field," said Lipps. "So I'm pretty excited for the future."
