Six Momentum 989 lacrosse teams, including many Midland players, will be among about 90 teams competing in the Great Lax Bay Classic on Saturday and Sunday at the Saginaw Township Soccer Association Complex.

The teams are part of a sport that continues to grow, including in summer competition.

Joe Stadelmaier of the Midland Lacrosse Club, who coaches the U15 team, said he organized one summer team in 2014 and the numbers grew steadily from there.

In 2016, the Midland summer teams merged with Momentum Lacrosse, an organization that started just three years ago in Columbus, Ohio.

That allowed the Midland players to become part of a bigger network of players, which includes a Flint-area club (Momentum 810) and a Traverse City and Cadillac-area club (Momentum 231), among others.

"Next year, we hope to travel out of state," Stadelmaier said. "It's just getting bigger and better every year."

Michael Kinney, a co-founder of Momentum Lacrosse and also the Alma College men's lacrosse coach, said the organization has grown rapidly.

"We started three years ago with 17 kids in Columbus," he said. "... (Now) we've got over 200 kids playing on nine teams this weekend (in Saginaw). ... The growth has been amazing. Our goal at Momentum is to elevate the level of play at the local (level)."

Admission is free to spectators at the Great Lax Bay Classic, which will include an All-Star Game tonight.

"If people want to see the fastest growing sports in America and the fastest sport on two feet, they should check it out this weekend in Saginaw," Kinney said.
