Boys Varsity improved their record to 3-1 with a 6-4 victory over Haslett in the cold rain Friday evening on the campus of Alma College.

Ethan Ohlrich scored two goals and Garrett Brillhart had two assists as the Midland co-op boys lacrosse battled to a 6-4 win over Haslett on Friday at Alma College.

“It was a huge win for us,” said Midland coach Kurt Brillhart, noting that Haslett is ranked about 20th in the state and Midland is about 30th.

Also for Midland, Jared Zahn had a goal and an assist, Ben Brueck and Creighton Annelin each scored a goal, Elliot Moore added an assist, and freshman Mason Reed also scored for his first goal of the season. Jared Zahn also led the team in ground balls with 5.

Midland led 5-3 at halftime before Haslett’s third-quarter goal made it 5-4. Zahn scored a man-up goal with about 2:30 remaining in the game for the final margin.

Brillhart said that Ryan Flint played excellent defense and Jeremy Brookens did a stellar job on face-offs while going against an Ohio State-bound Haslett player.

“He did a fantastic job,” Brillhart said of Brookens. “He didn’t win all (the face-offs) but he shut (the Haslett player) down. That was really key for us.”

In goal, Jacob Pokriefka made 12 saves for MIdland, which put about 16 shots on the Haslett goal.

Brillhart noted that the Alma College venue was arranged because Alma men’s lacrosse coach Michael Kinney has coached players from both the Midland and Haslett teams on Momentum summer travel teams.

“That was a very cool experience for the kids,” Brillhart said.
