Midland couldn't complete a second-half comeback and saw its season end on Tuesday with a 12-7 loss to Brighton in a Division 1 boys lacrosse regional final at Oxford High School.

The Bulldogs built a 7-4 halftime lead before Midland cut the deficit to 9-7 after three quarters. But Midland could not score in the fourth.

"We just ran out of gas and just couldn't put anything in in the fourth quarter to get it going," Midland coach Kurt Brillhart said. "Brighton is a more physical and bigger team than us, but we kept after it."

For Midland, Garrett Brillhart had four goals and one assist, Mason Reed had one goal and two assists, Elliot Moore and Ben Brueck each had one goal and Jared Zahn had one assist.

Midland senior goalie Jacob Pokriefka made 14 saves and was one of five Midland players returning on Tuesday after missing games due to injuries.

"He had just a heck of a (good) night," Kurt Brillhart said of Pokriefka.

Brighton won 17 faceoffs to Midland's four.

"They dominated us there and that really took away a lot of (potential) possessions and chances (for us)," Brillhart said.

Brighton advances to face either Hartland or Howell in a quarterfinal on Friday.

Midland finishes at 12-4 after reaching its second straight regional final.

"The kids played with a lot of heart," Brillhart said. "Most of the (seniors) have played together since fourth grade. They're an incredible group of kids and really led this team through a lot of injuries.
